The artist Daniel ‘Danny’ Simmons, Jr. is the elder brother of hip hop mogul Russell Simmons and musician Joseph Simmons (also known as “Reverend Run” of Run–D.M.C.). He is well known for his neo-African abstract expressionist paintings. The Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation, which he co-founded and has served as Chairman since 1995, offers underprivileged urban children with access to and education in the performing and visual arts.
The Rush Arts Gallery was established by Simmons as part of Rush Philanthropic; shortly after, a portion of his Brooklyn loft was turned into the Corridor Gallery, which continues to operate today. Early and mid-career artists who do not have commercial representation via galleries or private dealers are given the opportunity to show their work at both galleries.
Def Poetry Jam, which he founded with his brother Russell Simmons and has had long-running popularity on HBO, was the first of its kind. When Simmons released his novel Three Days As the Crow Flies, a fictitious depiction of the New York art scene during the 1980s, the world took notice. As well as writing, he has created artwork and poetry, which is collected in the book “I Dreamed My People Were Calling, But I Couldn’t Find My Way Home.”
